Overview
Big Kahunas is a popular water park located in Destin, Florida. It's a relatively large water park with a decent variety of slides, pools, fountains, play areas, and lazy rivers. Here's a list of the park's features:

  • Bombs Away Bay

  • Cobra Twister

  • Crocodile flats

  • Fun Fountains

  • Hammerhead

  • Honolulu Half Pipe

  • Humunga River

  • Jumanji

  • Lazy River

  • Maui Pipeline Speed Slides

  • Monkey River

  • Kid's Slides

  • Pleasure Island

  • Raging Rhino River

  • Thunder River

  • Tiki River Run

  • Wave Pool

The park caters to the family very well. They have lockers for dry clothes and valuables, a variety of food and drink options, and convenient places for mom to park under an umbrella while dad the kids play in the water.

Our impression of the park is favorable. The facilities seem very clean, and the staff and lifeguards are fun and professional. As is the case all too often these days, it's a pretty expensive activity for a family of six. However, it's an all day thing, so the value is actually pretty good.

For their 7th birthday, Mother Goose (Rebecca's Mom) gave the twins passes to Big Kahunas water park in Destin. We don't do this type of thing (ie expensive) very often, but we like to do one or two special things while vacationing in the Florida Panhandle, especially on occasions like birthdays.

We arrived at Big Kahunas water park midday, and the parking lot was already pretty full. We were worried about a crowd at first because there was a line at the gate. Our worries were soon quelled. We never had to wait for any of the attractions for more than a minute or two.

After stashing dry clothes and valuables in a couple of lockers, we headed for the water. The rest of the day is a blur. We went from slide to slide, and took breaks in the lazy river. A little thunder storm blew in mid afternoon, so we took cover in the food court area. Not to worry, if you don't like the weather in Florida, hang around for a while, it'll change. If it doesn't, Big Kahunas will give you a rain check. Fortunately for us, the rain passed quickly, and we were back in the water.

The Richardson Tribe played hard at Big Kahunas, and we got our money's worth. From there, we went to one of the many Alvin's Islands and bought hermit crabs for all the kids before heading back to the beach house in Seagrove. What an awesome day, and what a great birthday gift for the twins.

Note:
There was an incident that frustrated us, especially me. When buying tickets, the attendant mis-read the height indicator for the twins, and charged us an adult admission for both (48"). I expressed my discontent, but let it slide. Once in the park, the twins were not tall enough to do some of the slides that required a 48" height. Initially I thought the measuring device at the gate was incorrect. Turns out, the gate attendant was looking at the wrong mark on the height indicator. Big Kahunas management apologized for the error via Facebook, but never offered to reimburse the overcharge. Doesn't matter, we still liked the place. Take mucho Dinero though.
